The total population in 1995 was estimated at 10.3 million.
Major ethnic groups: 78%-Belarusians, 13%- Russians, 4%- Poles, 3%- Ukrainians, 1%- Jews and 1%- others. Approximately 69% of the total population are urban.
The average family is 3,2 persons; the life expectancy is 69 years (men- 64, women- 74).
At different times and for different reasons (such as economic, military, politics, religion, etc.) Belarusians were leaving their ethnic territories. The official statistics do not specify the exact number of Belarusians around the world.
There are between 3 and 3.5 million Belarusians living abroad, which makes almost one third of the nation. The United States of America is one of the principal countries of Belarusian emigration on the American continent. According to some data, over 0.5 million Belarusians have moved there. The main states of their settlement are New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan.
The State Program "Belarusians Abroad" is aimed at expanding contacts and cooperation with the Belarusian Diaspora. Since 1990 active work has been carried on by "The Society of the Belarusians of the World". In 1993, the first Congress of the Belarusians of the World took place in Minsk.
