After the success of the IBM PC, other computer makers began to use Intel chips and the 286, also known as the 80286, was widely adopted. Within 6 years of it release, there were an estimated 15 million 286-based personal computers installed around the world. The 286 featured on-chip memory management, enabling users to conduct several tasks at the same time.
