At its introduction, the Intel486(TM) DX microprocessor ran 50 times faster than the original 4004. "The 486 generation really meant you go from a command-level computer into point-and-click computing. I could have a color computer for the first time and do desktop publishing at a significant speed," recalls technology historian David K. Allison of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The Intel486(TM) SX microprocessor ran at 16 MHz when it was first introduced in 1991. It was the twin of the 486, but lacked a math co-processor, making it a more affordable chip for entry-level computer buyers.
