THE FAMOUS CREATOR of

'BELARUSIAN MADONNAS'

This is the Young Danae, the first professional work done after graduation from the Belarusian Academy of Arts.

Now it is difficult to believe that this innocent painting resulted in 15 years long period of isolation.

Why? - Mid 70s was the period of the highest ideological pressure. All people were expected to be devoted to the Party and to the ideas of Communism. This was the criterion to evaluate everybody's performance. Does this painting inspire the citizens to increase their productivity? Definitely not. So, what is the use of it?

The reaction of the young artist was to go underground and to keep doing what he felt he was inclined to. He created a series of works called "In the Paradise", which can be interpreted as a hymn to woman's beauty. This was the pre-Madonna period.
