Steel Cord
General information
Steel cord is a cabled of brass coated filaments and used as finished
product.
This is an integrate part of composite stucture of tyres provided
their longliving and dimensional stability.
The advantages whenever steel cord is used are:
- - considerable fuel saving;
- - high safety;
- - long mileage;
- - and so on.
DEFINITION
Cord (of metal)
A formed structure composed of two or more
filaments when used as an end-product or a combination of strands or filaments
and strands.
Coating (of metal filament)
a) Mass of coating:
The quantity of covering layer applied to
the surface of the filament expressed in grams per kilogram of coated filament.
b) Thickness of coating:
The averge thickness of the coating layer
expressed in micrometres.
c) Composition of coating:
The quantity of each of the components expressed
as a percentage of the total mass of the coating.
Breaking strength
The ability or capacity of a specific material
to withstand tensile rupture forces, determined by breaking force measurements
on more than one speciment of the material. The breaking strength is expressed
in newtons.
Filament
- A fibre of very great length considered
as continuous.
- Filament (of metal): A metallic fibre used
as an individual element in strand of cord.
Lay
a) Length of lay:
The axial distance required to make a 360
degree revolution of any element in a strand or in a cord, expressed in
millimetres.
b) direction of lay:
The helical disposition of the components
of a strand or cord. The strand or cord has an "S" or lefthand
lay if, when held vertically, the spirals around the central axis of the
strand or cord conform in derection of slope to the central portion of
the letter "S"; "Z" or righthand lay if the spirals
conform in derection of slope to the central portion of the letter "Z".
