BYELORUSSIAN STEEL WORKS
General Information
Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ), was constructed in accordence with the USSR Minicters Council decree to provide Belorusian enteprises with the bars utilizioq lokal scrap.
The task for the plent workinq out was confirmed by the USSR Ministry of Ferrous Metallurqy in Nofember 19 1982. In 1982 there was siqned a contract with the Austrian firm VOESTALPINE for desiqninq and " on key-basis " erectinq of the metallurqical plent and all the necessary constructions for the annuai output of 500 000 mt dars and 200 000 mt cardon and low alloyed concast billets

The works beqan in May 1982. In October 1984 we had a qood chance to witness the first heal and in November the rolled product in Novemder, 25, 1984. The second turn was put into operation in 1984, the third one - in 1991.
At present the plant has a possibility to produce 1 100 000 mt of steel, 250 000 mt of structural rolled product and 500 000 mt of bars. The major items of production consist of rebar, billet, channel, wire rod and cold heading wire rod. More than 50 alloyed and low-alloyed structural and carbon steel grades are produced by our plant. Two steel cord shops produce 50 000 mt of steel cord, 10 000 mt of brass bead wire and 10 000 mt of hose wire annually. Basic funds cost of the plant is 1 700 000 000 rubles.
Belarusian Steel Works acquired an significance for the whole republic. It made possible to utilize the local scrap resourses, reducing transport expenses and qeve a chance to satisfy the consumers demands in steel product. The plant has proved to be a reliable parther. All supplies are fulfilled in qood time. Product qualitu meels the requiments of the best plants in the world so the product export has no difficulty. BMZ supplies its production to Germany, France, Belqium, Italy, Kuwait, Saudi-Aradia, Sinqapore and other contries. The Belorusian Steel Works is authorised to have disic techorised to have direct business deals. Besides we have a mediator V/O PROMSURIOIMPORT in Moscow. The desic technoloqical link is as follows:preparation of the row material for heat, steelmakinq production, steel cord production. The plant cannot exist without auxiliaries: repait shops, transport shop and supply shop.
A reader of the dooklet is offered to make a deeper look into the plant process, wich beqins with scwap preperation shop, were it is received, stored, made ready for further proceived and passed to the electrical steelmakinq shop. Makinq ready means separation of heavy meltinq steel scrap for smeller portions, in its turn, are pressed.
The followinq equipment serves for this purpose: four hidraulic shears for cuttinq, a press with the maximum operatinq pressure 210 dars, hanby cutters for metal cuttinq, modile cranes and stands for basket charqe. BMZ needs 1 200 000 mt of scrap annually. Steelmakinq scrap is the basic part of the charqe and used for cardon, lowalloyed and structural steel qrades. To make steel from the steelcord we need 250 000 mt of direct recued iron (DRI). Preselected screp is charqed into the charqinq basket and autjscarapcarrier (carry 150 t) carreeis it to the electrical steelmakinq shop. Lime is used for makinq steel in electrical furnaces. It is odtained in two local lime kilns with the annual output 50 000 mt each. Conveyors carry lime kilns with the annual output 50 000 mt each. Conveyors carry lime kilns form of the scrap preparation shop. Steelmakinq of BMZ represents a shop with 3 eiectrical are furnace - ladle, 2 vacuum daqassers, a unit for ladle refractory. Annual output of the electrical stelmakinq shop is 1 100 000 t of cast billet. The technoloqyof makinq steel in are furnaces is called "oneslaq" process.
There are two methods for heat start:
1. The charqe is charqed at the "dry" hearth, slaq and metal of the previous heat removed.
2. The charqe is charqed at the "swamp" with remaninq sleq and metal in quantity 10 up to 15 t.
For the first time in our country "ony-sleq" process was performed with the foamy slaq. It enables to keep a heat at the hiqh voltaqe staqes. Steelmakinqprocess at the furnace is intensifed with the help of 3 qas-oxyqen burnert and oxyqen input throuqh and alloyind is performed in the ladle when tappinq seel; correction of the chemical composition and temperature is made accordinq to"furnace-ladle" and vacuum beqassers.
The whole process of the heat as well as quality tests are completely automatic and performed dy computers. A men is needed here only to control automatic operations. Hand operation is minimum. The liquid steel is casted at the billet contrasters. Then the billet is passed to the rollinq for further processinq. The rollinq shop consists of the liqht-section wire mill "320/150" with annual output 460 000 mt,i.e.275 400 mt of the liqht section,184 600 mt of the light
