Brothers and sisters,
In the darkness of night from October 19 to October 20,
the Trasfiguration Church in the ancient town
Zaslavl near Minsk was set on fire, and nearly destroyed. This was a disaster
on national scale, because it was from this place that Orthodox Christianity
started spreading through the lands of the Polotsk Principality of ancient
White Rus. In this holy place a church was built, where Princess Rogneda
(Anasthasia, as a nun) and her son Izyaslav (whose name the town bears)
were praying. It was in this holy place that the inception of Belarusian
Orthodox Church, and Belarus itself, as a Christian country, took place
1004 years ago.
I pray and I believe that the investigation which is
under way will find both the perpetrators, and the instigators of this
crime. The graffiti "Death to Christians" and an offending drawing
of the cross – upside down – on the church walls at the entrance have already
become evidence for the investigation case.
My dear compatriots, I call upon you to unite in our
prayers and thoughts in the face of the forces of destruction and enmity,
to unite "against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Eph 6:12),
mentioned by Apostle Paul. Lord Himself addresses all of us with words
of hope and consolidation, through His Apostle: "Only be thou strong
and very courageous, but thou mayest observe to do according to all the
law ... turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest
prosper withersoever thou goest" (Josh 1:7).
Truly, we witness the test by fire. But our joint prayer,
and our individual repentance before our Lord and Savior can block the
way for the evil, and force it to turn back. I believe that the words of
our Lord Jesus Christ about His Church, that "the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it"( Matt 16:18) shall strengthen us, shall strengthen
the believers in this country, and shall strengthen all Christian world.
