The situation of the labour market is unstable. 30278 people applied for jobs in the employment bureaus, that makes 35% more than in 1995.

The situation of employment is aggravating. From the beginning of the year 9974 people were employed, it is every third applicant, while a year ago- every second one could get a job.

In December 1996, like a year ago, there were more that 3 candidates for one vacaney.

It can be added to the statistic's information that within the last year 27.072 citizens of Minsk were registrated as the unemployed, the number is inereased by more than 50% if compared to 1995. The growth of the official unemployment in Minsk is the highlst among the ofher regions of the Republik. At the same time the avesade monthly numbes of the vacant working places is around 6000, as we are informed by the employers, and this is less than by one third in compasison with 1996.

The general demand is still formed by the branch of material production. The market of working places is basically presented by the vacancies for workers-drivers, tractor-drivers, construction workers. As for office workers and intellectual employees almost one forth is made by the vacancies for teachers, pedagogues, etc.It is a new tendency that came up from the second part of 1995.

The fact is the number unemployed has been grown by 62% while, the number of vacant places has been reduced. However the number of the unemployed is 36,3% more than in 1995. Almost 4000 people we directed by us for the professional training and re-training. More than a half of them were employed according to their speciality.

As before, industry holds the leading place among the ofher branches of national economy in its loss of the working places. Within the last year the industrial establishments presented the lists of people who left their jobs with the number of more than 11.000, that makes more than half of the general figure. The second place is taken by the construction, sales and public catering take the third place.

There were 47 cases of mass job leaving, but it did not effect the labour market as such. As it is shown by analysis, the systematic forming of the vacant places by people who leave the main enterprises leads to the growth of unemployment.
