Once on a week-end my girl-friend at last decided to sort-out things in her frig. In a far corner she found a forgotten piece of cabbage with stump wrapped into a newspaper. What a surprise was to see a strong stem with a crown of yellow florets growing from the stump through the paper. Being an urban woman she never saw a flowering cabbage. And her four-year-old son was in his raptures because they secretly grew in the frig such an exotic flower for father on the eve of the Army Day.

I asked the leading scientific specialist of the Byelorussian R&D Institute of Plants Protection, Candidate of Agricultural Science, Mrs. N.Koliadko to comment on the phenomenon of the old cabbage-stump. She told us that this is quite normal. The sleeping period came to the end and the buds burst into grow. There's nothing to wonder if the temperature in the frig was constantly +8 to +10ºC. Usually at the end of February or beginning of March the farmers start to prepere cabbage to sew for seeds. Tha stump in the frig is just ahead of its sisters from the vegetable store-houses.

I think it's only because spring is coming and in spring even the old stumps can flower.
