The Italian Embassy sent a note verbale concerning the actions of the local police to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus a few days ago. There are only words of thanks in the note ...
Ms. Maria Grazia Lombardo, a staff member of the Italian Embassy in Minsk, fell victim to pick-pockets in the Komarovki Market last Saturday. The woman didn’t notice her wallet disappear, together with a hundred dollars and with her documents in it, when she was in the middle of the crowd. But the inspectors of the municipal police noticed that. Anatoli Kravtsov, a junior inspector of the Investigation Department of the Minsk City Council Interior Office, together with his colleagues saw the actions of the thieves. They followed them and detained two person, while the third one managed to escape. Temporarily. Though he had succeeded in spending some fifty dollars on a small banquet, he wasn’t allowed to finish it. In sirprise, he dropped his jaw on seeing unexpected guests – the policemen.
What was most valuable for Ms. Lombardo – her documents – returned to her on the same day. This is what she told our correspondent: "First of all, I should have been more careful smyself. Second, the efficiency and friendliness of the Minsk militiamen were a pleasant surprise for me. I didn’t even hope to get my things back, and they returned them within hours."
