One of the labour exchanges in Minsk has registered an unusual unemployed person, Vasili Novikov, the First Deputy Chairman of the 13-th Supreme Soviet of Belarus. According to the law, the employment office must suggest him a job which is equival in its status to his previous one. For example, the job of a vice-premier would suit him. But it seems that a staff reduction in the government is not likely to happen.

Suffice it to mention that the government itself will have to spend an ample sum of money on the unemployed statesman – in accordance with the current legislation. They will have to pay Vasili Novikov his average monthly salary of a vice-speaker till November 1997. Thus, his "dole", quite possibly, will total four million roubles, taking into account both indexation and the growth of the minimal wages.
