Abramova sympathizes with Yavlinsky(24.01.97)

Olga Abramova, the famous political scientist, the Candidate of Philosophy, Delegate of the 13-th summon Supreme Soviet did not join any party. She remained faithful to her pre-electoral slogan: " One land. One nation. One life to succeed in assisting people." She made up her mind to establish in Belarus the public union "Yabloko"-- autonomous political movement, similar on its principles, goals and objectives to the Russian association "Yabloko".

- Olga Michailovna, first go the questions about your everyday life. Do you get your salary at the Parliament ? What do you do ? And if I may ask how do you support yoursef ?

- First of all, I got rather high fees for my analytical publications. I also received my service benefit. From now on, I shall be paid by the National Centre of strategic initiatives "East-West". I was reinstated there in the position of research programmes manager.

- Even being disappointed with politics you do not give it up...

- First, I do not feel myself to be offended and I do not think this year to be lost. That was a wonderful year. Second, take my word of an expert, who is following the situation, that the Supreme Soviet of the 13-th summon was more professional and very efficient, no matter what they say about it.

- Why it were you who initiated the establishment of social-democratic movement ? There is a block of political parties working in this direction.

- Frankly speaking, as a school-girl first I had been dreaming to become a geologist, then I wanted to become an artist. But it happened so that I turned my hands to politics. I did not participate in the activities of any political parties and movements. I sympathized with Yavlinsky as a politician and his views. In my electoral programme I indicated Grigory Yavlinsky and his "Yabloko" to be the most politically oriented.

- Did you get tempted with "Yabloko" ?

- My confederates which are the delegates of the 13-th summon Supreme Soviet, political scientists, economists, sociologists, teachers, physicians and scientists have arrived at the conclusion, that we cannot just stay away and watch the approaching economic bancruptcy. Our future depends on us. We unite in order to find ways of reformation of our economy and solutions for social policy problems. We believe, that Belarus as sovereign state needs a European type social-democratic organization, which does not have any genetic links with national-democratic movement. This organization should be free from radicalism and different extremes, cooperating with other political, professional and rights protective organizations on the issues of establishment in Belarus the prosperous society and rule of law state.

- What are the political and economic principles of the movement ?

- Briefly speaking, the movement supporters are promoting the reforms for everybody, not only for a small strata of society, looking for the ways of fast enrichment. We stand for the preservation and strengthening of Belarussian sovereignty, we look forward to keeping up friendly, equal and mutually beneficial relations with neighbour states and all democracy-oriented states.

The unemployment and crime rise, environmental pollution, state of the army, the opportunity for young people to get high-standard, public education, quality of medical service and an adequate payment for teachers and medical personnel are of great concern to us. We are worried about the state of culture and morality, ignorance of authorities to the issues of Belarussian language and national traditions revival. We are also concerned with the problem of impoverishment of pensioners, invalids, all needy and unprotected members of society.

- How are you plannig to bring your dreams into reality ?

- We count on strong individuals, their victory on the following parliamentary elections.

- So now you are working for the prospects ?

- Certainly. Currently we are undertaking preparatory measures for the constituent assembly. G. Yavlinsky, V. Lukin and other leaders of "Yabloko" are going to be present on the assembly having the status of guests. The movement`s activities will be conducted on professional basis. I guess, those concerned with its existence are going to provide us financially.

- Olga Michailovna, you had good chances to get a good job in new parliament. Why did you reject the proposal of A. Lukashenko ?

- First, the cable I got had been strangely sent. It had been forwarded several hours before the 110 delegates staff of the Lower House was adopted. Second, that was absolutely unaccaptable for me. If you followed the events, you could not help noticing that I was on the opposite side of "barricade". I was not quite satisfied with this proposal.

- You did that for no purpose. Currently some women have been promoted to some very high posts...

- Everybody is making his own choice. High posts are of no importance to me. More significant is to promote business.

- But it was very pleasant when you were proposed a post of the Secretary in Permanent International Affairs Comission of the 13-th summon Parliament, wasn`t it ?

- If you mean the political experience, I really got a lot of useful information and skills, especially by the way of talking to my collegues from other countries.

- By the way, Olga Michailovna, do you participate in the meetings of the 13-th Supreme Soviet ?

- Certainly I do. The matter is that on the last closed meeting a group of delegates who refused to work in the House of Representatives have signed the agreement, that they will continue working in the staff of 13-th summon Supreme Soviet.

- Are you a member of "shadow" government ?

- I did not have proposals to get into it. The "shadow" government was formed by OGP. We do not have contacts with this party. They are our future competitors.

-It seems that many people wll get interested in the Belarussian "Yabloko".

- We invite everybody who shares our views to join us. You can contact us on the following phones in Minsk: 268-56-79, 223-02-48.

The conversation was organized by Basil Romanovsky.
