Why Was LeoBase Developed?
In 1989 -- 1991
Leo Matveev, the leader of LeoBase project, being a member of small team
developed program packages ordered by some organizations (to calculate
salary, recording warestore papers and so on). At that time the most popular
computer in Belarus, on which such tasks could be realized, used in practice,
was IBM PC AT 80286, and the most popular DBMS for them which was so well
advertised in the USSR, -- Clipper v.5.0. At a certain development stage
the possibilities of this DBMS became unsatisfactory. The kernels ("filling")
of such DBMSs as Paradox and DataFlex had approximately the same possibilities,
and realizations of Oracle, Informix, Sybase and others for IBM PC turned
out to be too bulky for such class of tasks. The developers faced a dilemma:
to use standard solutions and to get an application program with limited
possibilities or to create something of their own that would satisfy current
needs. They decided to follow the second way. To realize the ideas of DBMS
on the base of this team a group was created which later on became the
core of "SoftInform" company. Îíè ðåøèëè ïîéòè ïî âòîðîìó ïóòè.
. .The main requirement at Leobase development
was getting maximal efficiency and flexibility at minimal requirements
to hardware. Today LeoBase represents the DBMS in the form of set of functions
which are necessary for work with professional databases. According to
test results carried out by LeoBase developers, its productivity (on PC
platform) exceeds many times such "professional" DBMSs as Oracle.
At present time, LeoBase is running under DOS and Windows 3.1x. And the
minimal requirements to computer resources comprise only 2 MBytes of memory.
Long ago LeoBase possibilities have overcame the limits of tasks for
which it was developed in the beginning. Besides a number of ordered tasks,
the apllication project of juridical information system JurInform
on legislation of Republic of Belarus and Russian Federation was developed
on LeoBase and introduced into exploitation. Today more than 200 copies
of this system have been sold in the Republic of Belarus. Other products
are being got ready to exploitation.
